After all the contestants got together
for a big breakfast in Au Gres, we headed to the boat ramp with our game faces
on. Most would fish fairly close in to avoid the heavy seas rolling off shore,
but a few ventured North. All boats stayed in contact with each other using both
cell phones and VHF radios, not just for safety, but to try and share what
information we could about the fishery. Unfortunately, the severe weather during
the previous two days in the area seemed to have scattered the fish and the
surface conditions that day made it very difficult to go looking for them so
there wasn’t a lot of info to be shared. Never the less, some decent fish were
still caught.
This was a
“best fish per team” competition so the weigh in didn’t take long! On hand
to officiate were Tournament Director Mark Bodrie and Club President Greg
Warsaw. First place went to Team Tight Line comprised of Chris Kinzler and Dan
Boileau with a big fish weight of 5.32 pounds. Second place honors go to Team
“Reel Late” – John and Jason Miller with a gorgeous 4.54 pound Saginaw Bay
Golden Eye and third place went to Team “Easy Mauney” made up of Joe Mauney
and Eric –Big Fish- Haroldson with a respectable 2.44 pounder.
Most of the contestants and tournament
officials then retired to the Town & Country Bar and Grill in Au Gres for
some delicious pizza and icy cold beverages. All who participated said they
enjoyed the less formal format and team spirit of this event. It was a nice way
to get some of our members introduced to a different fishery – even though the
conditions were challenging while we were there!
Congratulations to all who participated!
